09/18/2010 - 13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol�s Screen Tests with Live Musical Accompaniment by Dean&Britta

Andy Warhol is widely regarded as the most important artist of the second half of the 20^th century, and he brought the vision of a successful artist to his filmmaking activities. Andy Warhol's Screen Tests are beautiful and revealing portraits of different individuals, shot between 1963 and 1966. The subjects-both famous and anonymous- were visitors to his studio, the Factory. They were asked to pose, lit with a strong keylight, and filmed by Warhol with his stationary 16mm Bolex camera on silent, black and white, 100-foot rolls of film. Each screen test lasted only as long as the roll of film. The resulting 2¾ minute films were projected in slow motion so that each lasted four minutes.

13 Most Beautiful...Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests is a project jointly commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Indie rock luminaries Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips have composed music for thirteen of Warhol's four-minute, silent film portraits, the Screen Tests, which takes the form of a multimedia performance featuring large scale video projection of the Screen Tests above the musicians performing live on stage.

The first performances took place at the Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh in September, 2008. Dean & Britta have now performed the Warhol Screen Test show over fifty times around the world, from Lincoln Center in New York to the Barbican in London to the Sydney Opera House. The Augusta premiere of 13 Most Beautiful is made possible by a generous grant from The Porter Fleming Foundation.

Semi-Precious Productions is a joint venture between Matthew Buzzell, Coco Rubio, and Kristi and Eric Kinlaw. Their mission is to host arts events in unique spaces that combine and celebrate cinema, music, and cuisine.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
Beer, wine, and tapas will be available in the Sacred Heart garden area.

Legendary soul singer Al Green will close out the 2010 Westobou Festival with an 8:00 p.m. performance at the Bell Auditorium. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.

Al Green's extraordinary voice became known to the world through a string of legendary hits in the early 1970s, classics including ''Tired of Being Alone'', ''Let's Stay Together,'' and ''I Can't Get Next to You''. Recorded in Memphis with producer and arranger Willie Mitchell at Mitchell's Royal Recording Studios, those songs - and Green's falsetto screams, impassioned whispers, ecstatic cries and choked shouts - are etched into the mind of music fans everywhere.

Opening the Westobou Festival, this concert combines the legendary bluegrass artist Del McCoury and his band, with the equally legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the most renowned Dixieland jazz band. This will be the first time these historically important bands have played the same bill in Augusta.

Klugh has recorded more than thirty albums, including twenty-three records that reached the Top Ten on Billboard's Jazz Album chart. He has been nominated twelve times for the Grammy, in jazz fusion, best arrangement and pop instrumental categories, winning the 1980 Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the million-selling album ''One on One with Bob James.''

As composer and songwriter, Earl Klugh has contributed to recordings by Aretha Franklin, Jamie Foxx, Mary J. Blige, and many others, and he has played as a guest artist on recordings by Jimmy Buffett, Stevie Wonder, and Miles Davis, to cite just a few.

Formed in 1984, the Cavani Quartet was appointed Quartet-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1988, and was awarded the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award in 1989. In 2005, the Quartet became the first recipient of the Guarneri String Quartet Residency Award from Chamber Music America. One featured piece to be performed by the Quartet is Night Fields by the highly respected American composer Joan Tower. For the finale of their concert they will be joined by Augusta pianist Dr. Clara Park, for the performance of the Piano Quintet by Robert Schumann.

This concert will feature three internationally renowned jazz artists in collaboration with Augusta's own Rob Foster.

Ravi Coltrane, son of jazz legend John Coltrane and pianist/harpist Alice Coltrane, was a student of Rob Foster at the California Institute of the Arts. During that time period, Ralph Alessi (also a student at CalArts) and Rob Foster performed regularly in Entente, a jazz group in the Los Angeles area. Ravi Coltrane and Ralph Alessi, now based in New York, have performed and recorded together on numerous occasions. This will be their premier performance in Augusta. The legendary pianist, Art Lande, returns to ASU for the fourth time, having appeared in concert twice with Rob Foster as a duo, with Rob and The Russian Dragon Band, and also on tour with guitarist Nguyên Lê on ASU's Cullum Series on Jazz in 2006-07. Rounding out the ensemble will be Travis Shaw, from Augusta, on bass, and Danny Boozer on drums. Both of these musicians frequently perform with Rob Foster & Pulsar.

''Cajun Cabaret'' is a special evening for area residents with a selection of Cajun foods, art, and music presented in the style of a cabaret. There are two spaces inside the North Augusta Municipal Center that will host the Cajun Cabaret - the Palmetto Terrace and the Arts and Heritage Center. The Palmetto Terrace will host performances by the prestigious Juilliard Jazz, Cajun foods from local restaurants, wine and refreshments. The Arts and Heritage Center will host the Clay Artists of the Southeast's ''Clay in a Can'' exhibit, an exhibit of works by painter Jim Booth, a showing of artwork from members of the North Augusta Artists Guild, and the ''(Folk) A.R.T. Is*'' exhibit. To give guests the feeling that they are walking along New Orleans's Jackson Square, there will be artists painting throughout the building. It is sure to be an evening of good music, good art, good food, and fun times. Lassiez les bon temps rouler!

In 1999, Augusta's own Lou Ann Zimmerman became a signature member of the Whiskey Painters of America. Since that time two of the founders have died and there is only one remaining founder alive today, Tony Leroy Cross.
