Westobou FILM

The Sacred Heart Cultural Center, in partnership with Semi-Precious Productions, will present the world premiere of Transfigured Time: Music for the Films of Maya Deren Composed and Performed by Mac McCaughan as part of the 2011 Westobou Festival.
A photographer, poet, writer and social critic, Maya Deren is best known for her avant garde filmmaking. Deren, who died in 1961, explored themes of rejection, fame, violence and the creative process in a series on non-linear film experiments shot in the 1940s and ‘50s. Her friends and contemporaries included Marcel Duchamp, Anais Nin and John Cage.

Best known as a member of the bands Superchunk and Portastatic, Mac McCaughan is also co-founder of Merge Records. Over the course of more than 20 years, Merge has released albums by McCaughan’s own bands, as well as groundbreaking albums by Arcade Fire, Spoon, She & Him and Magnetic Fields.

Katie McQuerrey is a feature film, television, and documentary film editor based in New York but known for her work with some of Hollywood’s best. Since 2002, she has worked with Joel and Ethan Coen and has been a key member of their post-production team. Films she has worked on include The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, A Serious Man, and True Grit. Katie will offer her unique insight on the art of editing and will share her work with the Westobou audience.

Widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s finest film adaptations, this landmark film stars Gregory Peck as Progressive Southern lawyer Atticus Finch, a man forced to address issues of family and societal morays over the course of a controversial trial.

A documentary focused on author Harper Lee and her famous novel, Hey Boo features interviews with Lee friends and family – including her sister Alice – as well as famous fans reading passages from the novel. It also addresses Lee’s reluctance to write again and her famous disdain for publicity.
