Westobou VISUAL

Athens, Ga,-based artist Art Rosenbaum has been named the signature artist for the 2011 Westobou Festival. The Wheatley Professor in Fine Arts at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia, Rosenbaum’s distinctive style combines elements of classical figurative drawing, Expressionism and folk art. He’s also an accomplished collector and performer of American folk music. In 2003 he was awarded the Governor of Georgia’s Award in the Humanities.

Sarah Hobbs's carefully staged photographs explore phobias and obsessive compulsive behavior. What sets Hobbs apart from other photographers working in a similar vein is that she both constructs an illusion and at the same time exposes its materiality to the viewer. Her large-scale works concerned with "problem" behavior, the small photographs feel more like the result of psychoanalysis: controlled, neatly stacked, perfectly piled and orderly. Her Westobou contributions will include an exhibition of her photography and the construction on a site-specific instillation.

What does art sound like? What does music look like? These are questions pondered, and perhaps answered, by Hums & Oms. A collaboration between artist Priscilla Hollingsworth and musician/composer Carl Purdy, Hums features original music composed not only for traditional instrumentation, but also carefully constructed sculptures built with making music in mind.

The drive to create has always been an important part of Southern culture. It’s being celebrated by the Arts and Heritage Center of North Augusta with an afternoon dedicated to distinctively regional music and art. Events in exhibitions by the Clay Artists of the Southeast, Carolina’s Got Art! and the North Augusta Artists’ Guild. Local bluegrass band Doug and the Henrys will perform.

Translating as ‘Still I am learning’, Ancora Imparo reflects the ethos of not only the Augusta State University faculty taking part in this exhibition, but the path of every artist driven to make something beautiful.

Celebrated South Carolina artist Edward Rice is best known for his carefully rendered architectural paintings, which combines a sense of the familiar with the otherworldly. His work can be found in the collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the South Carolina State Museum and the Morris Museum of Art.

A juried art exhibition celebrating the work of artists from North and South Carolina, Carolina’s Got Art! features more than 100 pieces in a variety of mediums.

Founded by Joe Ferriot, a traveling salesman with a passion for art, the Whiskey Painters are an international organization that celebrates a specific style of miniature painting that utilizes small surfaces and exotic mediums. The first official whiskey painting was rendered in watercolor and martini. An exhibition of the group’s work has become a Westobou Festival tradition.

A temporary sculpture, designed by the 2011 Artists Row Scholarship winner, Sara Mays, will be constructed by community members and artists at the entrance of the Old Richmond Academy. This unique public art creation, "ARTie-The Garden City's Green Dragon", is being assembled with various recycled materials collected from the community. Art Experience is an exciting hands-on project that provides an opportunity to learn about the basic principles of art, recycling, and expand the community's awareness of the beauty and possibility in found objects. Simultaneously, a smaller, permanent sculpture will be made by children and artists. This piece will be auctioned during the Thursday, October 6th Art Bar at the Old Richmond Academy. Proceeds will support the Artist’s Row Student Scholarship and Community Outreach Fund. Bring your family and friends to help create ARTie.
